Why is Grandparents Day Celebrated?


Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade was a west Virginia homemaker. In 1970 she initiated a new campaign which was to set up a new special day just for Grandparents.

This Campaign was expanded through the state with the efforts taken on the part of civic, business and many churches and political leader and many more. The first Grandparents day was celebrated in 1973 in the West Virginia by that time Governor Arch Moore.

Moreover in the year 1973, a new resolution was started up by Senator Randolph in United States. This Thing helped Mrs. McQuade and her entire team to get media support. They Started sending letters to different different churches and businesses and plethora of national organizations who were interested in senior citizens. They also started contacting governors and many congressmen in every state.

In the year 1978, that is five year after its West Virginia Inception the United States Congress passed the legislation proclaiming that the first sunday after Labor day will be treated as National Grandparents Day. This was signed by that time President Jimmy Carter.

Today this event is observed by millions and millions of people throughout the United States.
